Dr. Eva Coleman Andropause

Hello, I’m Doctor Eva Coleman. In this video, I’ll be speaking about Andropause; the natural progression of hormonal decline in aging men. I will cover:
  • Symptoms
  • Testosterone Replacement Therapy
  • Controversial issues related to Testosterone Replacement Therapy
  • Proper testing and evaluation
  • Medical monitoring
  • Positive lifestyle changes

I am going to quickly review the symptoms of low testosterone. And, as I do so, I want you to consider a very important point:

Most often, testosterone is thought of as the “master” or the “only” male hormone.

However, both male and female health is dependent upon maintaining proper levels of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, cortisol and thyroid hormones. An imbalance of one---or a combination of these hormones can mimic or worsen the symptoms of existing low testosterone.
Low testosterone affects a man’s entire being. Symptoms include:
  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss in muscle and bone mass
  • Weight gain with high body fat
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Night sweats/hot flashes
  • Fatigue
  • Depressed mood
  • Insomnia or disturbed sleep
  • Lack of concentration
  • Loss of self-confidence

This is quite a list. But………with proper treatment, the imbalances causing these symptoms can be reversed. And, please keep in mind: imbalanced hormones, other than testosterone can also cause the symptoms I just mentioned.

Today, many forms of Testosterone Replacement Therapy are frequently used to address symptoms of Andropause.

But…………significant controversy surrounds this therapy, regardless of form. So, the “big question” is……………
Does testosterone replacement cause or prevent heart disease and prostate cancer?

Researchers have conducted several studies over the past decade. Sadly, the studies have produced mixed evidence.

For example, some evidence suggests that men using testosterone have more heart attacks and strokes………… and die from heart disease. Other evidence suggests that cardiac risks are lowered with Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

In January 2014, conflicting results from several studies prompted the FDA to issue a safety warning about the possible connection between Testosterone Replacement Therapy and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

During that time, mixed evidence also resulted from studies designed to determine if Testosterone Replacement Therapy causes prostate cancer.

While Testosterone Replacement Therapy has not been proven to cause prostate cancer, the treatment is never prescribed for high risk or active prostate cancer patients.

Another important point……Some prostate cancers are “estrogen sensitive”. This means that long-term, high levels of testosterone can stimulate conversion to estrogen, which can cause prostate cancer.

So, what does all of this mean?? Consider the following. Safety and effectiveness of long-term Testosterone Replacement Therapy can only be achieved when the following procedures are followed by a qualified
Physician and the patients:

1. proper testing and evaluation

2. customized treatment plans developed
for every patient based on appropriate test results

3. regularly scheduled medical monitoring; ensuring treatment safety
and results for every patient

4. patient compliance

Before concluding this video, I want to suggest some lifestyle changes known to promote healthy testosterone levels and overall hormonal balance. These include:

  • Proper diet; ensuring “nutrient-dense” foods to promote hormone balance while eliminating sugar which decreases testosterone
  • Appropriate exercise to maintain muscle and bone mass and support the cardiovascular system
  • Weight loss as needed to boost testosterone levels
  • Stress reduction; supporting adrenal glands and their ability to maintain normal levels of DHEA and cortisol
  • Avoidance of environmental toxins known as endocrine disruptors

I recommend avoidance of self treatment with over the counter or mail-order products because testing, evaluation, monitoring and follow-up by a qualified physician are essential to the success of this treatment.

In closing, I share with you, that I have consistently observed the safety and effectiveness of Bio-identical Testosterone Replacement. Thank you for watching.
